WORDS WE SHOULD TRY TO AVOID
"Psycho" / "Looney" / "Insane" / "Crazy" / "Weirdo" / "Mental"
These are just some of the words that are used frequently by most people in public, but they forget the subtle yet lasting impacts they may have on those battling mental health problems. These words have in common that they are neither inclusive nor respectful, creating a taller barrier for those who need help to surmount. Language is constantly evolving, so becoming more educated on the social context and climate are steps in the right direction for promoting better mental health.
PHRASES WE SHOULD TRY TO AVOID
"it could be worse," "just deal with it," "you're not the only one."
These phrases may also sense that their struggles and feelings of hardship are normal and that it is not a big deal. This is detrimental to their healing as they will think that not seeking help is normal. Therefore, if you know someone is in need, try to speak with caution and empathize with their hardships. Make them feel unique, loved, but most importantly, included. We have a choice in what we say, so let’s make the right choice.
